HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — A coalition of mayors and first selectmen is calling for the expansion of Connecticut's assault weapons ban and new permits for rifles as part of a package of recommendations for reducing gun violence in the wake of the deadly school shooting in Newtown.

The Connecticut Conference of Municipalities, which represents city and town leaders across the state, unveiled 13 legislative proposals Wednesday.

CCM wants to give municipal CEOs who deny pistol permit applications the ability to file an appeal when the Connecticut Board of Firearms Permit Examiners overturns those denials.

The group also wants to expand the list of offenses that would prohibit someone from obtaining a gun permit.

The group's recommendations come as two tasks forces consider possible legislation this session to address issues raised by the Dec. 14 shooting.
