HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The State Bond Commission has approved $30 million in funding to create new supportive housing units in several Connecticut cities.

Friday's bonding authorization was part of $460 million effort by Gov. Dannel P. Malloy to boost state spending on supportive and affordable housing.

These latest funds will be used create 179 units in Bridgeport, Hartford, New Haven, New London and Waterbury.

Malloy, who is the commission's chairman, said supportive housing addresses the root causes of chronic, long-term homelessness by providing decent, safe and affordable rental homes. Recipients also receive health, support and employment services.

Malloy's overall supportive and affordable housing plan involves fixing up dilapidated and vacant public housing units across the state over the next decade.
