Conn. to mark National Voter Registration Day

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Secretary of the State Denise Merrill is marking National Voter Registration Day by announcing the latest voter registration figures for the state of Connecticut.

Merrill is holding a news conference on Tuesday to recognize the day when volunteers, celebrities and organizations from across the U.S. coordinate efforts to spread awareness about how people can register to vote. Organizers cite U.S. Census figures that show six million Americans did not vote in 2008 because they did not know how to register or missed their state's registration deadline.

Merrill is also expected to discuss the Connecticut Election Project , an educational curriculum designed to spark students' interest in this year's presidential election and Connecticut's Senate and General Assembly races.

The curriculum covers three main areas, including election history, election literacy and election math.
