HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) -- Democratic Congressman Joe Courtney has won a fourth term representing eastern Connecticut.

Courtney defeated a Republican challenger, Paul Formica (for-MEEK'-ah), the first selectman from East Lyme.

Courtney was first elected in 2006 in the 2nd District as Democrats took control of Congress.

On the campaign trail, he touted his record of support for U.S. submarine production, including advocacy for funding that has benefited Navy contractor Electric Boat in Groton. He also presented himself as a fierce advocate for the submarine base in Groton that has faced the threat of closure in recent years.

Formica is a restaurant owner who criticized Courtney for his support of Democratic policies and argued business owners could do a better job of managing government.
