Democrats debate and clash on ads

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (WTNH) -- With the primary vote less than a month away, the two Democratic candidates flushed out the issues and there were jabs here and there.

The movie theater massacre was among the first issues up for debate on Sunday between the two Democrats after their party's spot on the ballot for U.S. Senate.

Congressman Chris Murphy and former Secretary of the State Susan Bysiewicz were in agreement, in support of more gun control legislation.

However, they are not seeing eye to eye on an ad put out by the Bysiewicz campaign concerning Murphy's financial contributors.

A reporter asked Bysiewicz, "Why can't you just re-edit [the ad] then if there's an inaccuracy. Why not re-edit the ad?"

Bysiewicz responded with, "You know what, I'll take down the ad if Chris Murphy goes ahead and gives back his $700,000 to Wall Street."

Murphy was asked, "Her argument for not pulling the ad is that the overarching theme is accurate, do you disagree with that?"

"The ad is false, there is a number of claims in the ad that her own campaign acknowledges are fictitious," said Murphy, "and if I was running an ad that my own campaign acknowledged was false, I'd pull the ad."

News 8 will have a more in-depth look at the debate coming up later Sunday night.
