EAST HAVEN Conn. (WTNH) - The FBI has become involved in an ongoing criminal investigation involving members of the East Haven Police Department.

No officers have been identified and the Mayor April Capone Almon declined to elaborate on the nature of the criminal investigation that began two months ago.

"I want to emphasis that I have been told by the FBI that this is NOT an investigation of the East Haven Police Department. Rather it is an investigation of certain members of the Department," Almon said in a written statement.

The New Haven Independent reports that the criminal investigation comes on the heels of a Department of Justice civil investigation. The DOJ began investigating the East Haven Police Department back in 2009 following allegations of racial profiling and police brutality.
