Fuel cell producing clean energy

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- The sprawling facility that services and dispatches all of Connecticut Transit's Greater Hartford area buses has gone green.

The United Technologies Company fuel cell has started producing clean energy for the 300,000 square foot facility in Hartford's North Meadows and is expected to save thousands of dollars per year in energy costs. It's being paid for by a grant from the Federal Transit Administration and another grant will install a similar facility in New Haven.

"Today, we're also taking the step to announce that we have received a $5.7 million FTA grant that will bring this same technology to New Haven," said Gov. Dannel Malloy.

Connecticut Transit becomes the first transit authority in the nation to use clean technology for both buses and to power it's operation facilities.
