Hartford (WTNH) - The state Supreme Court has ruled against Susan Bysiewicz, saying she does not meet the qualifications to be Connecticut attorney general.
"I am tremendously disappointed with the court's decision overturning Judge Sheldon's ruling and I strongly disagree with the decision both on the eligibility and the constitutionality issue," Bysiewicz said in a written statement. "However, I do respect the rule of law and will abide by it."
Bysiewicz, the current Secretary of the State, went to court after a blogger suggested she didn't have the required ten years experience as a lawyer required for the job. A Superior Court judge had ruled in her favor, saying that her time as secretary of state counted as active practice.
The state Republican party appealed that ruling to the state Supreme Court. The ruling today was unanimous.
The ruling comes just days before state Democrats meet to endorse a candidate for attorney general and other statewide offices.
Bysiewicz was challenged by George Jepsen for the Democratic nomination. In a statement he said " I want to welcome Susan’s supporters to be a part of my campaign team. This is a surprise and I had expected the voters would make the final decision in the August primary."
