Long voting lines in New London

NEW LONDON, Conn. (WTNH) -- Polling places across the state have seen high voter turnout, but in New London the lines are even longer than most.

That's because one of the polling places is pulling double duty thanks to Hurricane Sandy.

"I'm three, that's two, okay, this is two."

There was a little bit of confusion at the Harbor School polling place in New London.

"If you're all set you can go right there," said Rose Butler, Assistant Registrar of Voters.

Storm damage at Ocean Beach park sent the district three voters to the school where district two usually votes. Many didn't expect to see the long lines.

"Especially this time of day," said Pam Barrows, of New London, "I thought more people would still be at work or some place."

A wait worthwhile for some voters.

"People are concerned more than they were last time. That's right, they are more concerned, they are," said Marion Batey, of New London.

"Do you think the close race has brought more people out," asked News 8's Tina Detelj.

"I think it did," said Batey.

"The state of the country is so tenuous I had to vote," said Joyce Pearson, of New London. "There's just no way I couldn't vote. Everyone should vote."

Some poll workers tell News 8 they haven't seen a steadier stream of people coming into the polling place in a long time and it's not just because district three was there now along with district two, which usually is there. They say individually they've seen a lot of people just stream through the doors.

"I had them down around and coming back up, it was that crazy," said Butler, "but you know what, everybody was patient, everybody was laughing."

Butler says it's just as busy as it was four years ago.

"I'm ready," said Annie Small, of New London, "I"m ready, that's all I can say."

The more people, the truer the vote may be.

"Thanks for voting, have a nice day."
