Malloy budget to seek $2 billion from Conn. unions

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's senior adviser is confirming that the administration is seeking $2 billion in savings over two years from state employees in the two-year budget he's unveiling this week.

Roy Occhiogrosso said Tuesday it's correct that $1 billion of the $1.8 billion in savings Malloy's plan seeks in the first year of the new state budget would come from employee savings, including concessions. The second year includes another $1 billion in labor savings.

The remaining $800 million would come from spending cuts, to be revealed Wednesday.

Malloy released details of his tax package on Monday. It raises a wide range of taxes by $1.5 billion in the first year of the budget. The state faces a $3.2 billion deficit in the new fiscal year which begins July 1.
