Malloy proposes sales tax hike

Would also eliminate Tax-Free Week

Hartford, Conn. (WTNH) - Gov. Dannel Malloy's budget plan calls for over a billion dollars in tax hikes, including an increase in the sales tax.

The sales tax would jump from 6-percent to 6.25-percent. Malloy also wants to eliminate Tax Free Week in August and start taxing clothing under $50.

Shoppers at the Westfield Connecticut Post Mall say all that adds up to some tough choices for Connecticut families.

"People are going to have less money to spend on clothes and food. If it's a choice between food or clothes, look at me, I would choose food," said Bernice Tomsheck of Milford.

Governor Malloy is battling a huge budget deficit, but working parents like William Mendez say he should find a way to make money that doesn't hurt families.

"Yeah, it's going to affect everybody with kids in school. We've got 2 kids in school and soon we're going to have another one in school and clothes and everything is going to be a killer for everybody," Mendez said.

These are just proposals and still have to make their way through the legislature.
