HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — State records show that Gov. Dannel P. Malloy's administration has spent more than $250,000 to upgrade security at the governor's mansion in Hartford.

The Hartford Courant reports that administration officials say the security changes were recommended by the State Police following the shooting of then-U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Arizona in January 2011.

Officials also said some intruders gained access through the back of the property since Malloy became governor in January 2011.

The biggest expense was $130,000 to fence in the 4.5-acre property for the first time since the state bought it 69 years ago.

The updated security also includes $65,836 for video surveillance cameras installed around the property.
