McMahon robo-calls aimed at the elderly?

MERIDEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- The Linda McMahon 'medicare-scare' call is really stirring things up in Connecticut's US Senate race, but is the campaign robo-call from McMahon only aimed at scaring elderly Connecticut voters?

If you are a senior citizen and a registered voter with a telephone, chances are you got a call earlier this week from someone that sounded like a sweet old lady.

"I'm Madelyn...Chris Murphy voted to cut $700 billion out of our Medicare benefits. I don't know about you, but I rely on my Medicare benefits and politicians like Chris Murphy need to keep their hands off," a voice on the McMahon robo-call said.

"Paid for by Linda McMahon for Senate 2012."

Thousands of Connecticut senior citizens have received the same automated robo-telephone call from the McMahon campaign this week.

Mitt Romney is doing the same thing, claiming the President is attempting to cut the Medicare program to fund Obamacare.

"I think they're trying to scare everybody, really...they're trying, of course, aim for elderly voters," said Lorraine Mitchell, of Meriden.

"Petrified, um really, I was hoping that things would improve rather than get worse," said Kathleen DeFlorio, of Meriden.

And the Senate candidates have been arguing about it since Wednesday.

"He voted for the Affordable Care Act, and so in that is uhhh...reduction in Medicare funding," McMahon said.

"It's a lie, the health care bill increased Medicare benefits for seniors," Murphy said.

In fact, Murphy is right. Medicare benefits have actually increased.

"Do you think they're trying to scare senior citizens," asked News 8's Mark Davis.

"Yes, they are, definitely," said Barbara Buonanni, of Meriden.

Independent analysis of the Affordable Care Act has concluded that the $700 billion is actually expected savings in the future growth of Medicare over a decade; savings that Romney's own Vice Presidential running mate included in his federal budget plan.

"I hung up as soon as I found out it was from Linda McMahon because, I says, 'I don't want to listen to her garbage,'" said Buonanni.
