HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Secretary of the State Denise Merrill is expected to announce Connecticut cities and towns that will participate in an audit of the recent statewide primary results.

Merrill has scheduled a press conference on Thursday to choose the municipalities at random. Audits of the optical scan voting machine results are required under state law.

Merrill announced last week that 28 percent of registered Republicans and 19 registered Democrats voted in the Aug. 14 primary, based on figures reported by the registrars of voters. Merrill said the figures are slightly below normal for Democrats and slightly above normal for Republicans in a statewide primary.

The 5th Congressional District saw the highest voter turnout, with 32.3 percent of Republicans and 23.5 percent of Democrats casting ballots.
