Murphy turns up the heat on McMahon

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- Democrat Chris Murphy is turning up the rhetorical heat on Linda McMahon in the race for U.S. Senate.

Among other things, he's calling the Republican a hypocrite.

Murphy went on the counter attack Tuesday against McMahon's constant barrage of TV commercials about his past financial problems.

"The hypocrisy of Linda McMahon running this ad on TV while she is $28,000 late on her taxes in Stamford..is...mind blowing," said Murphy.

"Oh for heaven's sake," said McMahon, "umm...we received a bill in September, on September 13th, about taxes. We paid the bill, uh, and that was all there is."

She also dismisses Murphy's criticism about her paying off her bankruptcy creditors now that she's running for the Senate, saying he should release all documents relating to his home equity loan. He dismisses that.

"Why don't you release the documents about your loan so that this stuff will go away," asked News 8's Mark Davis.

"There's no question as to whether I got a deal any different than people that walked into that bank," Murphy replied.

Murphy does want to shift the focus of the campaign onto what he believes will turn women voters off McMahon.

"Linda McMahon made millions of dollars demeaning women in the ring and she can't run away from that," Murphy said.

"I made my money the old-fashioned way and I'm proud of the company that I built and the way we reformed an industry," McMahon said.

However, what the Murphy campaign really hopes will bring women voters to him is his record on women's issues, and what he says her election to the Senate would do.

"Linda McMahon's election would turn the U.S. Senate over to a radical right wing majority that will end a woman's right to choose," said Murphy.

"I am a 'pro-choice' candidate," McMahon said. "I have said that from day one, and I think I would never support late term or partial birth abortions."
