Round table discussion on gun violence

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- Today Connecticut lawmakers went to the North End of Hartford to hold a round table discussion on gun violence. They were there to listen to possible solutions and did they get an earful.

"What we're going to talk about mental health issues. The same thing that everybody's talking about now. We were talking about and proclaimed those things because we knew it fell on deaf ears, so don't come down here today telling me to make me feel good if you are not going to do something to change it because I am tired of people dying and I am tired of funerals. I have seen this all the time," said Rev. Henry Brown.

Rev. Brown is optimistic that lawmakers heard his message and that they will be able to make some changes and he also liked their message of unity.

"The fact that the two senators from CT that experience this horrific, unspeakable tragedy are writing together, working as a team has enormous impact and meaning to the vice president and to the president I believe," said Sen. Richard Blumenthal.

"Wrote a letter jointly to the vice president and his task force that we send him today asking them to take a strong and comprehensive look at gun control. We believe that it starts with a ban on the dangerous weapons and ammunition that were part of the tragedy in Sandy Hook but we also know that it's also about requiring background checks," said Sen. Chris Murphy.

Rev. Brown says the banter back and fourth, the ideas, the passion is all heading in the right direction. He just hopes that passion doesn't fall short in the end.

"I took away from the meeting that there is a lot of pain still, about what happened in Newtown and you are reaching out to us for solutions but we have been feeling this pain Newtown is feeling for the last 11 years so we grieve with Newtown but also we want to see changes made," said Rev. Brown.
