HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Arizona Sen. John McCain is coming to Connecticut to campaign for Republican Senate candidate Linda McMahon.

The 2008 presidential candidate is scheduled to appear at a morning event in Danbury with veterans on Oct. 1. Later in the day, he's plans to attend rally at McMahon's campaign offices in Norwalk, said McMahon campaign spokesman Todd Abrajano (ah-brah-JAH'-no).

McCain previously endorsed McMahon's rival in the GOP primary, former U.S. Rep. Christopher Shays.

Abrajano called McMahon an "independent-minded Republican" like McCain and said they "see things similarly in terms of bucking their party when they need to."

McCain has been embraced in Connecticut, winning the state's 2000 and 2008 presidential primaries.

McMahon is in a close race with Democratic Rep. Chris Murphy to fill the seat being vacated by Sen. Joe Lieberman.
