Suzio: early release program is flawed

HARTFORD, Conn. (WTNH) -- A state Senator and others are calling for a suspension of the early release program for prisoners.

Senator Len Suzio, the State Victim Advocate and a group called Survivors of Homicide say the program is flawed and that it was ill-conceived, and is dangerous to the public.

A store clerk in Suzio's district of Meriden was brutally murdered allegedly by Frankie Resto, a man who got out of prison six-months before he was supposed to because of the early release program.

Suzio says "all too often criminals are let out before their victims even get out of the hospital."

"There are hundreds of pages, how does someone with a disciplinary file this large get risk reduction credits under this program," Suzio said.

Suzio has started a petition drive to put pressure on the Governor to investigate the program's effectiveness and affect on public safety.
