Term limits proposal advances in Bristol

BRISTOL, Conn. (AP) — Term limits on the city's major elected officials has received a boost, but it's got a long way to go before reaching the voters for approval.

The Bristol Press reports that the Charter Revision Commission has backed a proposal prohibiting the mayor and city councilors from serving more than four consecutive two-year terms.

Board of Education members could not serve more than two four-year terms.

Term limits won unanimous backing from the charter commission and heads to the City Council in June to decide whether to put the measure on the ballot in November.

City Councilor Kevin Fuller said voters already have the right to limit terms by voting out office holders.

Supporters say term limits would attract newcomers to city government.
