HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — The Malloy administration is preparing to award the first round of grants to towns and cities that agree to jointly buy or lease vehicles and capital equipment.

The legislature and Gov. Dannel P. Malloy have made up to $20 million available over the next two years to municipalities that agree to share resources to save money. The Intertown Capital Equipment Purchase Incentive Program is part of an overall strategy to encourage more regionalism and efficiency in local government.

The Republican American reports that the first round of grants of nearly $860,700 will soon be made to 31 towns and cities.

Grants pay up 30 percent of buying or leasing vehicles and capital equipment. It increases to 50 percent if a community is designated as distressed, a targeted investment community or a public investment community.
