PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) — Rhode Island is getting a new top sheriff.
David M. DeCesare is being sworn in Friday as chief sheriff for the Rhode Island Division of Sheriffs.
Before being named chief sheriff, DeCesare worked for Johnston police for 24 years. He has been deputy chief there since 2009.
In his new job, DeCesare will lead a department responsible for transporting prisoners and ensuring security at the state's courthouses and other buildings. The department has around 175 employees.
