MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (WTNH)--  Some local firefighters were gearing up to help hungry families.

Shopping bags filled their carts at the local Stop and Shop, to "Stuff the Truck" for the Amazing Grace Food Pantry. They feed more than 1,000 families a month.

Firefighters say even though the need is overwhelming, it's just as overwhelming seeing so many shoppers willing to donate.

"It's very humbling and it's a great feeling, and I was telling someone else, people come out with a cart full of food and they pick up one bag, and they say no the cart's yours and you say that's amazing," said James Mastroianni, President of Union, South District Firefighters.

He says it's become routine to help the pantry at Thanksgiving and Easter.

Last year, they raised 14,000 pounds of food and they're hoping to crush that this year.
