Commencement weekend at UConn for 7,000 students

STORRS, Conn. (AP) — The University of Connecticut is holding its graduation ceremonies this weekend, conferring about 7,000 undergraduate and graduate degrees in multiple ceremonies.

UConn President Susan Herbst and Department of Children and Families Commissioner Joette Katz, will speak to nearly 2,700 graduates of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences during dual commencement on Sunday inside Gampel Pavilion.

Robert Gallo, the scientist who discovered that HIV causes AIDS, gives the keynote address Saturday afternoon to about 1,500 students at the graduate student commencement.

Other speakers include state Education Commissioner Stefan Pryor at Sunday's education school graduation, and U.S. Rep. John Lewis, one of the key figures in the civil rights movement, who will speak to graduates at the UConn School of Law.
