VERNON, Conn. (WTNH)-- Police are investigating after possible human skeletal remains were found in Vernon, on Thursday.
Little did Adam Viens know that a walk in the woods would lead to a team of police officers walking in the woods.
"I was the one who found the skull originally," the Vernon resident said. "It's pretty bizarre."
Wednesday, as he was walking in the wooded area off of West Street, he noticed something odd. When he picked it up, a grim realization sunk in.
"Happened to go down where the brook was, look over, seemed fake at first. Not thinking too much of it, I picked it up, had fillings in the teeth, pretty scary," said Viens.
Vernon Police say this area was the Old Rockville city landfill that closed in the sixties. It was later cleared out. There have been all sorts of discoveries there. This, however, is a first.
"It's crazy. Scary, I mean, I thought we were in a safe neighborhood," said Derrah Nelson of Vernon.
State Police are assisting in the investigation. As for Adam, he wonders what else might be discovered with a walk in these woods.
"I looked around, but it was, um, literally a few inches away from the water. It may have just surfaced recently with the past storms and all the snow melting, you know," said Viens.
Police are using cadaver dogs from the state police K9 unit.
The investigation is in the preliminary stages and there is no further information at this time.
