UConn's Spring Weekend passes quietly

STORRS, Conn. (AP) — University of Connecticut officials say this year's Spring Weekend was fairly quiet with only six arrests and no large, out-of-control gatherings.

The annual four-day span of festivities had seen rioting and drunken crowds in the past, but officials have imposed strict measures over the past two years to prevent violence and other problems.

UConn Police Chief Barbara O'Connor said the six arrests made during this year's Spring Weekend, which ended Sunday, were average for any weekend. She called it the Spring Weekend that wasn't.

University officials and police have barred guests from residence halls, blocked or limited access to some roads and increased police patrols on and off campus. In 2010, 84 people were arrested and a student died from injuries suffered in an off-campus assault.
