Focusing on the Issues

(WTNH) - "To quote the phrase heard at race tracks everywhere -- And they're off.

If there was any doubt that the horse races of this year's political season were already out of the gate, the developments of the past 24 hours should settle that question.

And while it would be easy here to throw out some plea for the candidates to avoid the now standard assault on character points, is it too much to ask for some substance before we hit the first turn of this year's political grand prix?

Like maybe focusing on the issues?

Instead of bombarding us with the campaign rhetoric about how never being elected to public office makes one a better candidate simply because they aren't a political insider, or the opposite notion that having been elected in the past automatically means a candidate is more able to get things done, how about telling us in plain English what you would do if you got elected and how you would go about doing it?

The reality is that campaigns like to focus on fuzzy concepts like change, progress, and a better future. It is easy to promise those things and much harder to deliver them.

So instead of another political season of races filled with the inevitable attack ads and character assaults, wouldn't it be a refreshing change to skip the talking points and get to what really matters: Finding some serious people, willing to do what it really takes to solve our serious problems.
