Windham, Conn. (WTNH) - In Windham, a half dozen people are out of their apartments due to an early morning fire.

It happened in building 336 at the Windham Heights public housing complex on Monday morning.

A woman in one of the units reported that her curtains were on fire.

Help from the surrounding towns came to help fight the fire.

Matthew Vertefeuille, a Windham Code Enforcement officer, said, "The inital concern is with a complex like this, the exposure is 18 apartments. That can be dozens of people in this one building alone. The building is adjacent to other buildings. If it was to spread, the exposure is a lot lives that are in danger. So when there is a working fire they call for all the help they can get."

Six apartments are damaged.

Residents are being assisted by the Red Cross.
