WINDHAM, Conn. (WTNH) -- A new restaurant in Windham is attracting folks who like to buy local. It's been open for six months now, but it's name was familiar to many long before that.
At a time when farmers are struggling, a group in eastern Connecticut all got together to promote their products. It started with their own brand of milk in stores and now they have their own cafe.
You may have seen The Farmer's Cow products in the stores and now you can get them in a restaurant.
"Everywhere in the menu we have our eggs for breakfast, we do our egg salad for lunch. We use our milks, and creams, and half and half for our coffee," said Justeen Bligh, Farmer's Cow Calfe & Creamery.
Bligh helped open this first Farmer's Cow Calfe and Creamery on the Windham/Mansfield line in August. Since then more and more folks have stopped by to check out the home grown menu.
"The ice cream is fabulous," said Lyn Buonocore, of Columbia.
"That's my wife, I have to agree with her," said Nick Buonocore.
All kidding aside, Lyn and Nick Buonocore say they were already familiar with the products started by six eastern Connecticut farmers.
"I think it's wonderful to support the local people around here as opposed to another franchise," Nick said. "Everything is fresh and very very good."
It is also a place where the farmers get to try out new things. In the stores they have 10 different flavors of ice cream. At the restaurant they have 31.
Including seasonal flavors. There's also a milk bar with cookie dough milk, and all the staples milk, eggs, coffee, and ice cream packaged to go.
"This was the location where we could have everything Farmer's Cow in one location," said Bligh.
The cafe also features products from other local farmers to help them get exposure as well.
