Charlestown, R.I. (AP/WTNH) - A 17-year-old boy from Scotland, Conn., has been taken by helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital after a hole he spent hours digging on a Charlestown beach collapsed and buried him up to his neck.
Dozens of rescuers from Charlestown and surrounding communities using heavy equipment spent two hours digging out the Connecticut teen after the six- to eight-foot deep hole on East Beach collapsed on Tuesday evening.
The boy, whose name was not made public, was breathing and alert when he was finally pulled out of the hole at about 8:20 p.m. His condition was not immediately available.
He had been at the beach with his family, who called emergency personnel after trying to dig him out themselves.
