WILLIMANTIC, Conn. (WTNH) -- A woman in cardiac arrest was rescued by a firefighter and a man jumped to save his life after fire engulfed an apartment house in Willimantic early Tuesday.
In total, nine people were hurt, including six firefighters
The fire happened on South Street around 12:45 a.m. The second and third floors of the multi-family home were fully engulfed when firefighters arrived.
One man jumped from a window of the third floor onto the lawn to escape the flames. A firefighter went up to the third floor to rescue the man's wife. The firefighter had to carry her down three flights of stairs while she was in cardiac arrest.
Officials tell News 8 two people are in the hospital this morning. Katherine Hill was taken to Rhode Island Hospital and David Marshall was taken to Windham Hospital.
Hill is in critical condition.
Six firefighters also were treated for minor injuries including a hand laceration, banged up knee, and hypertension.
Six people were displaced by the fire. The Red Cross as well as the town's human services are on the scene assisting.
There was no immediate word on how the fire started. The state fire marshal is investigating.
