(WTNH) -- Garden expert Mar Jennings says the flowerboxes and containers you used all spring and summer shouldn't be ignored in fall.
Here are Mar's sMARt tips for the month:
October is the perfect time to freshen up those tired outdoor containers with a touch of color and texture. That said, thank goodness for the wonderful colors of Chrysanthemums that are now in full season. Commonly referred to as Mums-like the informal UK reference to mother-Mums are hardy and long lasting when watered daily. My sMARt tip #1: For longest-lasting enjoyment, purchase plants with tight buds rather than full flowers. My smart tip #2: Step-up your planters by adding interesting texture along the base of the plants; I love using dried Hydrangeas flowers. Simply remove all leafs from the flowers and insert the stems right into the soil. For the best impact, follow the entire rim of the planter. This is a terrific unexpected twist that is both resourceful and creative.
Decorative ornamental grasses are available in abundance this time of year, and offer a whimsical touch to any well-appointed garden design. But this week's sMARt tip is not about planting grasses, rather about using their decorative foliage to create wonderful fall décor.
