(WTNH) -- Blackhorse 4 Heroes is an equestrian center in Bethany that seeks to help returning veterans of war with a special program involving people and horses.
It's seen as a kind of therapy and guidance that helps returning vets ease back into civilian life.
President of Blackhorse 4 Heroes , Brad Bertele, says that horses are used because as Winston Churchill once said, "There is something about the outside of a horse that is good for the inside of a man."
Bertele says that riding was chosen because it is a dominant posture, while driving on the ground or in a carriage requires a mutual respect between the horse and human.
Additionally, Bertele says it is a big problem that needs to be addressed, as it is estimated that there are 18 veteran suicides per day in the United States.
