New Haven (WTNH) - Fitness expert Lisa Lynn stopped by Sunday to answer the million dollar fitness question: how do you get rid of love handles?

Here's what Lisa says about the steps you need to take:

There are tons of workouts as well as diets on the market, but not all of them are created for fat/weight loss. It is very important that you are clear on exactly what your goals are. Anyone can lose weight but not everyone loses fat while losing weight. I like to have people thinking leaner not lighter, because there is a very specific way that you need to eat and train in order to get rid of those stubborn fat deposits, a.k.a. the last 5 pounds. If you have been losing weight but you haven't been very good about getting into the gym, now is the time to get moving.

Here are three things that you absolutely must do if you're serious about losing those love handles or the last 5-10 pounds!

1. You must eat clean 80% of the time. In order for you to lose those fat deposits you need to eat clean in order to starve the fat cells so that they leave! You need to feed the muscles and starve the fat. This means that your sources of protein need to be virtually fat free. The best sources are fat free low carb protein shakes, egg whites (no yolks),skinless turkey or chicken breasts, and any kind of fish. Stay away from red meat, as well as pork or ground meat unless you have your own 97% lean meat ground. You also have to watch your starchy carb intake. I suggest eating lots of leafy greens and very little starchy carbs such as pasta, bread, potatoes, etc especially after 3 p.m. Eating these foods early in the day allows your body to digest and burn them off instead of storing them in that love handle area.

2. Supplement for fat loss! This is more important than you realize to get rid of unwanted stubborn fat.

This is that extra push your body needs to get a kick start to burn that love handle fat. Think of it as going to work without tools like computers or pens. You need tools to help you lose fat, especially if you are one of those people who's body just doesn't want to shed fat. However, not all supplements are geared for fat loss; in fact some supplements may actually cause you hold onto fat because it will feed those fat cells so they will never leave. All of these new age supplements that are good for health may not always be good for fat loss. Something that may be in your supplements to be on the lookout for are essential fats that claim they will promote fat loss. These may do just the opposite because you are already eating fat everyday in your diet and you need to know how much is right for your body. You should also be on the lookout in your kitchen for oils that are used for cooking or in salad dressings, as well things like nuts, cheeses and flax seeds. The good fat loss supplements make sure your body uses fat as fuel by bringing it into the cells to be used as fuel, or acting as a "mop" that mops or cleans up excess fats by absorbing fat like a sponge.

3. Get moving in the gym! If your fat loss has stalled you need to take a good look at your current program.

You should be looking closely at what you are eating, as well as how much. You need to be lifting weights at least three times a week, but you also need to increase your cardio workouts to as many days as you can get in. I of course suggest seven days a week, but the most important point here is that you need to do more than you are currently doing right now. Start out by adding an extra day; if adding an extra day isn't possible be sure to add more time/minutes onto your current cardio session.
