New Haven (WTNH) - Lisa Lelas was back with us this morning to show us how to go
green this Christmas by cutting down on wrapping paper.
The following information was provided by Lisa:
If you want to go a little "green" this holiday season, why not
forego some of the many rolls of wrapping paper usually needed?
With a little extra thought and a few easy tips, festive gifts can
look wrapped up in 're-usable' containers!
1. Use re-usable gift giving boxes. Cover boxes with fabric or
use pre-printed boxes so there is no wrapping needed! Adorn with a
sprig of evergreen, a pine cone or a candy cane. Fun tip: Assign a
particular gift box to someone in your family that you can use year
after year. For a bit of nostalgia, on the inside box cover, keep a
gift list of all the gifts and the years they were given.
2. Use cookie tins to hide gifts. And it doesn't have to be
cookies! Use them for gifts like jewelry, small electronics or
anything else that can fit. The recipient can re-use the package
next year.
3. Pretty photo boxes work great to package gifts, especially
for a photo related gift, such as a camera, small photo album or
picture frame. They are inexpensive and serve as a second "gift" to
the recipient.
4. Decorate Mason jars with crafty toppers such as a snowman
or wrapped candy. These are great for food items, such as cookies
or candy, or fill with recyclable and biodegradable straw or strips
of plain paper and tuck a small token gift inside, so it's not
visible through the glass.
5. For the cooking enthusiast, why not place homemade goodies or
even kitchen type gadget gifts directly into re-usable plasticware
that the recipient can use in her own kitchen after the holidays.
Or bundle cooking related gifts into a bundt cake pan, wrapped up
in a pretty cotton kitchen towel.
6. Use small wooden or bamboo boxes to tuck in gifts, wrapped in
a pretty silk scarf.
7. For the teen or college student on your holiday gift list, a
ceramic cork topped jar is ideal for stashing a gift card or a
small bundle of cash they can always use! These jars usually have a
fun saying or title for every personality: Vacation Fund, Mall
Fund, Dreaming, etc. You can also stash a gift card inside a new
pair of warm fuzzy socks tied with raffia.
8 And finally, if you really need to wrap, use the newspaper
funny pages for a whimsical look. After it's unwrapped, it's
completely recyclable!
