New Haven (WTNH) - One organization is giving talented New Haven public high schools graduates a chance to succeed, by helping them pay for their higher education. The New Haven Scholarship Fund is celebrating 50 years of giving back to deserving, young scholars who need it.

The New Haven Scholarship Fund has helped 6,000 talented and motivated graduates break what the organization calls "the cycle of limited opportunities." Jim Barber, president of the New Haven Scholarship Fund and Cynthia Harris-Jackson a former scholarship recipient told 'Good Morning Connecticut' that in the 50 years since its founding, the New Haven Scholarship Fund has awarded over $6 million in grants to more than 6,000 New Haven public high school grads with the academic potential and financial need.

The grant money is used to assist graduates with college and post secondary education enrollment requirements. The organization says it's only able to press forward with the help of volunteers, some of whom have been on board for over 30 years. Barber says the volunteerism is more than a noble cause, it is something about which all of us have great passion.

The New Haven Scholarship Fund is a nonprofit organization, its sole mission is to provide scholarships to eligible New Haven students who have unmet financial
needs and academic potential. To learn how to help just log onto www.newhavenscholarshipfund.org
