During the past year, social networking sites like facebook, twitter and LinkedIn have seen tremendous growth. And businesses big and small have been trying to figure out how to make social media work for them.

Kim DeYoung, The Metro Mom, says creating a presence on the social media platforms is good business, for a number of reasons. She joined us Saturday on Good Morning Connecticut.

"I'm a big fan of social networking," said DeYoung. "It's just yet another way to begin touching customers, to begin providing value to people."

DeYoung says being visible on social networking sites may not immediately impact your bottomline. But it will help businesses of any size grow their profile. She says social networking allows businesses an opportunity for increased customer awareness, it creates another platform to sell products or push a message and it can build customer loyalty by allowing for better interactivity between the business and its customers.

DeYoung also encourages businesses to start a blog. Again, she says it's an opportunity to get the message out there in a more non-traditional way.
