New Haven, Conn (WTNH) - Analiese Paik with the Fairfield Green Food Guide talked with GMC Weekend about spring planting season for your vegetable garden.
After the winter we've had it's hard to believe, but spring planting season is here.
If you're planning to plant a garden this spring, now is the time to flip through your seed catalogs or visit your favorite seed companies online to place your orders. Backyard, community, and school gardens are wildly popular, so order early to avoid missing out on your favorites.
If you're new to gardening, consider starting small with an easy early crop such as peas or lettuce. Even if you just plant peas in a container on St. Patrick's Day, you will enjoy the freshest, most delicious peas you've ever had because you've grown them yourself. Research has shown that children who grow and pick their own food tend to eat it. That means they'll eat more vegetables!
Seeds are very inexpensive, and if you make your own compost, you'll likely wind up saving money by growing your own.
Visit your local garden center to purchase supplies for a container garden or raised beds and obtain some excellent gardening advice while you're there.
