(WTNH) - Analiese Paik of the Fairfield Green Food Guide explained the importance of choosing sustainable seafood and where you can find it.
Paik says nearly 75 percent of the world's fisheries are overfished, and our seafood choices have a direct impact on the health of our oceans.
She says one of the best ways to ensure the fish you eat is sustainable is to consult Seafood Watch, a program of the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Their sustainable seafood recommendations come in handy pocket guides and mobile applications that indicate which seafood items are "Best Choices," "Good Alternatives," and which ones you should "Avoid." Another way you can eat sustainable seafood is by buying from Target or Whole Foods Market. Target has eliminated all farmed salmon from its stores, as recommended by Seafood Watch. Paik says Whole Foods Markets was one of the first American companies to join the Marine Stewardship Council in 1999, a group committed to working toward rebuilding declining seafood populations. Whole Foods also began working with the Seafood Watch and the Blue Ocean Institute to offer consumers a new, progressive Wild-Caught Seafood Ranking System.
