NORWICH, Conn. (WTNH) -- It was in late summer of 1643 when the Mohegan and Narragansett tribes faced off just above Yantic Falls in what is called the Battle of the Great Plain.
Earlier, the Mohegans - led by Uncas - thwarted a surprise attack by the Narragansetts before arriving at that fateful spot. According to legend Uncas appealed to the Narragansett chief, Miantonomo, to fight one on one. But when refused the Mohegans charged.
Miantonomo leapt the gorge to escape, but those of his tribe were not so lucky. Many Narragansetts plunged to their deaths onto the rocks and rushing water below.
Meanwhile, Uncas refused to allow Miantonomo to run off, leaping the chasm in hot pursuit. It is what earned the falls its nickname 'Indian Leap'.
Miantonomo was later captured and the falls now live in local lore.
