New Haven - NEW HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- John Annino of DEEP Boating Division was on hand to talk about National Safe Boating Week.

There are nearly 4,000 boating related accidents each year. As a result, more than 700 fatalities occur. There were eight boating fatalities in Connecticut last year alone.

The major cause of boating fatalities is drowning. A huge majority of those who drown are not wearing life jackets or Personal Flotation Devices .

Carbon monoxide poisoning
has recently been identified as a major danger for boaters. It is important to understand it and avoid it.

There are new laws about the proximity of boats to various large vessels, bridges, and shore facilities.
