GROTON, Conn. (WTNH) -- The Revolutionary War hit home for the men and women of Groton when in 1781 the British demanded the surrender of Col. William Ledyard and his men.

The infamous traitor Benedict Arnold led the charge up the Thames River. He and his men were heading to New London while another regiment advanced on Fort Griswold.

Col. Ledyard and his men fought hard, but the British ultimately overpowered Ledyard's garrison. Ledyard surrendered his sword, which was then used to kill him.

A massacre ensued as 88 defenders died on the hill that day. The grounds were looted and set aflame.

Today, Fort Griswold State Park is a standing memorial to those who served so bravely on that historic day.
