WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- It was July 5, 1779, when the British invaded New Haven Harbor. And it was that day that a hero emerged, a most unlikely candidate: British Adjutant William Campbell.
Although part of the enemy force he is seen as a heroic figure in West Haven all because of a moment in history. You see, Campbell rescued the Reverend Noah Williston of the First Congregational Church. He was an outspoken revolutionary who broke his leg trying to escape.
Campbell spared the reverend his life and actually ordered soldiers to return him to his church and treat him. That good will was expressed in other ways too as Campbell showed respect to local folks by soldiers 'in line'.
Despite such efforts, Campbell was killed just hours later by a farmer turned defender.
A memorial headstone now marks the approximate gravesite of this British hero, and a street bears his name.
