WEST HAVEN, Conn. (WTNH) -- Think of it as our very own Coney Island.

West Haven's Savin Rock boardwalk was the place to be beginning in the 1870's when a 1,500 foot pier was built and ferry service spurred growth.

White City, as it was known, utilized electricity soon after to power up the many games and rides that began to emerge in this entertainment hub.

Not even the hurricane of 1938 could stop this roller coaster ride, even when it literally destroyed the park's 85-foot-tall Thunderbolt coaster.

Another was built soon after and 'The Rock' carried on. That is until 1967, when redevelopment forced the park's doors to close. But remnants of those old glory days remain with places like Jimmie's and its famed split hot dog.

and for those who missed out during the golden era, there's the Savin Rock Museum which offers visitors a unique glimpse back into time.
