The famed Waterbury Clock Tower

WATERBURY, Conn. (WTNH) -- The Waterbury Clock Tower is a recognizable feature along the Brass City's rolling landscape.

The tower opened in July of 1909 and was built at a cost of $332,000.

Standing at 240-feet tall the tower is largely kept under lock and key. A total of 318 steps gets you to the top of this city landmark, where a cool breeze refreshes you after a long climb.

The clock's eight gargoyles still loom over the sprawling city below and the bell still tolls.

But it's original inner workings rest on display in the front lobby of the Waterbury Republican-American newspaper, which calls the clock tower and former Union Station home.
