(WTNH) -- Their mission is to promote the independence of women and children who are homeless. For the last 23 years, New Haven Home Recovery has helped shelter families.
"Typically, you deal with women, HIV-AIDS, all kinds of issues, is there a typical phone call that comes in that says, I have two children, I have no where to go. What is the type of phone call that you receive," asked Nyberg.
It's hard to say that there is anything that is typical, the number one reason that families are homeless is the affordability of housing so when you have a high unemployment rate or you have a lot of low paying service jobs in an area such as New England, such as Connecticut where apartments are expensive, if you were to go to South Bend, Indiana, you might be able to rent a two bedroom apartment for 6 to 800-hundred dollars, I'm not sure what their fair market rent there is, but I'm sure it's lower than it is here in New Haven County which it's up around 12-hundred dollars a month, you just can't afford that if you're a single mom with two children working a low end service job," said Kellyann Day of New Haven Home Recovery.
