East Haven, Conn - In boxing the name Camacho carries some weight: Hector Camacho was a four-time world champion in his day, and his son Hector Jr. may have his chance soon.
However, New Haven's Elvin Ayala has something to say about it.
"I see him as a great fighter too" said Ayala, "He's got a lot of fights, a lot of good wins. His father was a great fighter."
Among the many things Camacho Jr. has inherited from his dad is the willingness to build his fight resume. Senior had 79 career bouts and was a four-time world champion. Junior is 53-4-1 with 28 knockouts.
Camacho and Ayala both have something to fight for, the winner will get a world title fight.
"I know he's coming to fight, he's expecting to win, he's fighting a big name so he must be pumped for the fight" said Camacho, "but I think he's in over his head with the experience I have. I'm ready, I'm coming to fight."
Ayala is coming off his best year as a pro, he went 4 and 0 and won his first title, the WBC U.S. National middleweight belt.
The showdown with Camacho will be Ayala's first title defense and be broadcast on national television and he wants to win in style.
"A win is a win, but not only just beating Camacho, like knocking him out or hurting him," said Ayala, "having him stop fighting, something like that would be great."
Ayala is ranked 16th in the world in the middleweight division. Camacho would like to see him fall a few notches by taking Ayala's belt.
"I wouldn't mind, put it in the collection," said Camacho, "I wouldn't mind at all."
The two will step into the ring Friday March 30th at Foxwoods Resort Casino's MGM Theater.
