Albany, NY (AP) - Stephanie Geehan scored 16 points and added eight rebounds as third-seeded Fairfield outlasted second-seeded Iona 61-57 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference tournament semifinals Saturday morning.
Desiree Pina added 15 points for the Stags (19-12, 12-7 MAAC), who won their ninth straight game to reach their first title game since 2001. Fairfield advances to face Marist in Sunday's championship game.
Thazina Cook had 19 points and Suzi Fregosi added 10 in a losing effort for the Gaels (18-13, 13-6 MAAC).
Leading 45-43 midway through the second half, Fairfield held Iona without a point for a crucial 7:28 stretch, building its lead
to eight. Iona pulled to within 53-51 with 41 seconds remaining, but the Gaels could get no closer as Fairfield hit 8-of-11 free throws in the final 27 seconds to ice the win.
