HAMDEN, Conn. (AP) — Stephen Lumpkins scored 12 of his 19 points in the second half to lead American to a 61-55 nonconference victory over Quinnipiac on Monday night.

Lumpkins hit two free throws with 50 seconds left to give the Eagles (1-1) a 58-55 lead after the Bobcats (1-1) had cut a 56-49 deficit to one point, 56-55, with 1:25 to play. Tony Wroblicky added two free throws with 17 seconds left to put the Eagles ahead 60-55.

The Eagles enjoyed a big advantage from the free-throw line, making 81.2 percent (13 of 16), while the Bobcats managed just 33.3 percent (3 of 9).

American also shot better from 3-point range, making 6 of 11, including 3 of 5 by Daniel Munoz, who finished with 13 points, the same as Wroblicky. Quinnipiac shot 6 of 17 (35.3 percent) behind the arc.

Ike Azotam and Dave Johnson scored six points each for Quinnipiac.
