(WTNH) -- For the first time ever, the Connecticut Sun is looking for a new head coach.
Mike Thibault was with the team when it arrived in Connecticut in 2003 and held the job until Tuesday. He was fired.
The team is saying it wants to go in a different direction
Ultimately, not winning a WNBA championship is what cost Thibault his job.
This years loss in Game 3 of the Eastern Conference Finals to Indiana may have been the deciding factor in Thibault's release. It was not one of the teams finer moments.
Not retaining the coaching staff was a difficult move for the Sun front office. Vice President and General Manager Chris Sienko, who developed a close friendship and working relationship with Thibault had this to say:
"Mike has had much success here in Connecticut over the past 10 seasons. However, we felt it was time for a new voice and new direction for our players and our fans as we continue to try to capture that first, elusive title. We wish Mike and his family nothing but success and know our paths will cross again in the future."
Thibault did have plenty of success with the Sun, a franchise that was struggling when he took over. Two appearances in the WNBA Finals, five trips to the Eastern Conference Championship, over 200 wins, and plenty of community involvement.
The search for Thibault's replacement has already begun.
