TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — The Arizona Cardinals have released running back Beanie Wells after four injury-plagued seasons. A first-round pick in 2009, Wells has only played one full season — his rookie year. Wells eclipsed 1,000 yards and scored 10 touchdowns in 2011, but was limited to eight games last season due to a turf toe injury. He ran for 234 yards and eight touchdowns. Wells has 2,471 yards and 24 touchdowns rushing, with 28 catches for 293 yards in 51 career games.

GLENDALE, Ariz. (AP) — The Phoenix Coyotes have signed forward Henrik Samuelsson, their first-round draft pick last year, to a three-year entry-level contract. GM Don Maloney announced the signing yesterday, but didn't disclose financial details. The 19-year-old Samuelsson is from Scottsdale and is the son of former NHL defenseman and ex-Coyotes assistant coach Ulf Samuelsson. He's been playing for the Western Hockey League's Edmonton Oil Kings and has 32 goals and 47 assists in 67 games this season.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Jeff Samardzija (suh-MAR'-juh) homered and allowed four runs over 4 2-3 innings yesterday in the Chicago Cubs' 7-5 win over the Arizona Diamondbacks 7-5. Samardzija, prepping for an opening-day start at Pittsburgh on April 1, gave up four hits and two walks and struck out two. He hit a solo homer to center in the fifth against Eury De la Rosa that pulled the Cubs to 3-2. Arizona starter Trevor Cahill allowed one run and three hits in four innings, walked none and struck out five.
